It’s a wise parent who provides their child with a  selection of odds and ends they can use as props and lets them decide what those props will become and how they will be used for play. What a concept! A child using their innate creativity and imagination to have fun instead of sitting in front of a TV or video screen!

As a grandparent I am from a generation that remembers well not having TVs or video games to play with, and while I was one of those parents who welcomed Sesame Street and Mr. Roger’s into my own children’s neighborhood, I now find myself truly dismayed at the techno-culture many of the children in my grand children’s generation are so submerged in. In fact, I’m concerned that there is a serious danger there may be many kids so deeply submerged that their own imaginations never get the opportunity to germinate at all.

So I ask you…what does this mean?  What would  – or will – the world be like if this next generation grows up never learning to rely on their own creativity…their own sense of wonder and real interaction with other children – not icons or avatars or bleeps on a screen that they can control without understanding the human consequences of their actions?

I watch my little granddaughters and so many of my customers as they  tap into their imaginations and believe with all their hearts that they are capable of flying when they put their fairy wings on and I realize that magic is still alive and still growing whenever it is encouraged. Whether it is a dad showing his son how to make paper airplanes…. searching for dragons……reading a bedtime story………or granting wishes with a fairy wand. To all of you parents and grandparents out there who take the time, and care enough to plant the seeds and encourage a child’s imagination to flourish…….

Fairy Dust To You!!!!
